Where to stay on the Costa del Sol for a first trip: choose the right base
For a first Costa del Sol trip, the best base is the place that matches the holiday you actually want.

The coast is not one continuous resort. Málaga city, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona and Nerja create very different daily routines.
The easiest first decision is not “which town is best?” but “what do I want most days to feel like?”
Quick answer
Choose:
- Málaga for culture, food, museums, transport and city atmosphere.
- Torremolinos for easy airport access, beach and a classic resort with rail.
- Benalmádena for family activities, marina, beach and variety.
- Fuengirola for a compact, walkable beach town with excellent C1 access.
- Marbella for restaurants, polished resort atmosphere and a more upscale feel.
- Estepona for a slower western-coast stay with an attractive old town.
- Nerja for a smaller eastern-coast base and a different atmosphere from the western resort corridor.
Málaga: best if you want a city holiday with beach
Málaga works especially well for first-time visitors who want variety.
You can combine:
- historic centre;
- museums;
- food;
- port;
- beach;
- nightlife;
- train;
- Metro;
- airport access.
Málaga María Zambrano connects with C1 and C2, while the C1 links the city directly to Málaga Airport and the western coast corridor.
That makes Málaga one of the easiest bases if you plan several day trips.
The trade-off is that it feels like a real city, not a self-contained beach resort.
Torremolinos: easiest classic beach base
Torremolinos is one of the safest first-trip choices because it combines:
- direct C1 rail from the airport;
- beach;
- restaurants;
- nightlife;
- a broad accommodation inventory;
- quick access to Málaga.
The official tourism site also divides the destination into recognisable zones such as Centro, La Carihuela, Bajondillo and Playamar.
Choose La Carihuela or Bajondillo for stronger beach atmosphere.
Choose Centro for rail and urban convenience.
The main thing to check is slope between central areas and the coast.
See Torremolinos on Costa Guest.
Benalmádena: best for variety
Benalmádena is not one place.
The official tourism site distinguishes:
- Benalmádena Pueblo;
- Benalmádena Costa;
- Arroyo de la Miel.
That matters enormously.
Benalmádena Costa gives beach and Puerto Marina.
Arroyo de la Miel gives C1 rail and everyday services.
Benalmádena Pueblo gives white-village atmosphere inland.
The destination also has a large family and leisure offer, including Sea Life, Selwo Marina, Teleférico and Parque de la Paloma.
For a first trip with children, Benalmádena is one of the strongest all-round options.

Fuengirola: easiest compact resort town
Fuengirola is very easy to understand on a first visit.
The town has several C1 stations and a long seafront.
The official tourism site describes seven kilometres of coastline and a long promenade.
That means you can build a holiday around:
- beach;
- walking;
- restaurants;
- shopping;
- train;
- day trips.
It is particularly good for visitors who do not want to spend much time planning logistics.

Marbella: choose it because you want Marbella
Marbella has a stronger luxury and lifestyle image.
It is a good first-trip choice if your priorities are:
- restaurants;
- beach clubs;
- polished hotels;
- Puerto Banús;
- old-town atmosphere;
- golf;
- nightlife.
But Marbella is geographically spread out and has no C1 rail station.
That means the exact district matters more than in Fuengirola or Torremolinos.
Choose Marbella centre if you want old town and promenade.
Choose Puerto Banús/Nueva Andalucía if that lifestyle is the purpose of the trip.
Do not book a random “Marbella” address and assume everything is nearby.
Estepona: slower and more local-feeling
Estepona is a good first base for travellers who want a quieter rhythm.
Its old town, promenade and western-coast setting work well when you do not need constant trips to Málaga.
The trade-off is transport.
Without rail, repeated east-west movement takes more planning.
Choose Estepona when the town itself is part of the reason for the trip.
Nerja: different from the western corridor
Nerja has a smaller-town feel and sits east of Málaga.
It is attractive for:
- Balcón de Europa;
- old-town streets;
- beaches;
- eastern Costa atmosphere;
- slower evenings.
It is not on C1, so it is less efficient if your plan is to make repeated trips to Fuengirola, Benalmádena or Marbella.
For a first trip focused on Nerja itself, that may not matter.
First trip without a car
The easiest bases are generally:
- Málaga;
- Torremolinos;
- rail-connected Benalmádena;
- Fuengirola.
C1 directly links these areas with Málaga Airport.
That can remove airport transfers and reduce taxi use.
For Marbella, Estepona or Nerja, compare buses and transfers before booking.

First trip with children
Strong choices are:
- Torremolinos for easy logistics;
- Benalmádena for activities;
- Fuengirola for compact daily life;
- Málaga for older children who enjoy cities.
Do not choose only by hotel kids club.
Look at the whole daily routine: beach, supermarket, transport, evening meal and bad-weather options.
See the family accommodation guide.
First trip as a couple
Couples have more flexibility.
Málaga works for food and culture.
Marbella works for restaurants and polished atmosphere.
Nerja works for smaller-scale charm.
Torremolinos and Fuengirola work for easy beach holidays without much planning.
The “best” choice depends on whether you want resort, city or smaller town.
First trip for nightlife
Nightlife varies by district.
Málaga has city nightlife.
Torremolinos has established nightlife areas.
Benalmádena has activity around Puerto Marina and other zones.
Marbella has a strong premium nightlife image around Puerto Banús.
Do not book a hotel directly above nightlife unless that is what you want.
First trip for beaches
Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmádena give easy resort-style beach access.
Marbella and Estepona have strong beach options but larger geography.
Nerja offers a different, smaller-town coastal feel.
The best beach base is usually the one where your accommodation is genuinely walkable to the section of coast you plan to use.
First trip for culture
Málaga is the obvious first choice.
It gives the strongest concentration of museums, historic centre, port and urban life.
You can still make beach days and rail trips west.
If culture is a major part of your holiday, do not stay far away simply because another town has cheaper rooms.
First trip for golf
Marbella, Benahavís, Mijas and western Costa del Sol areas can make sense.
But golf courses are dispersed.
If golf is a major objective, transport and course locations should influence accommodation more than beach proximity.
A rental car may be useful.
Airport convenience
Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola benefit from the C1 airport corridor.
Torremolinos is particularly close.
For a short three- or four-night break, airport convenience can matter more than a small difference in destination atmosphere.
Do not try to see everything
The Costa del Sol is long enough that trying to “cover it all” creates too much travel.
For a first trip, choose one strong base and make two or three good day trips.
That gives you time to experience the destination rather than spending the holiday in transit.
Seven nights: a simple approach
For a one-week first trip:
- choose one main base;
- spend at least three or four days locally;
- make two day trips;
- leave one flexible day.
You do not need to change hotels unless your itinerary genuinely covers very different parts of the coast.
Split stay or one base?
A split stay can be useful if you want both Málaga city and a western/eastern coast resort.
For example:
- 2–3 nights Málaga;
- 4–5 nights Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Marbella or Nerja.
But moving hotels costs time.
For a short trip, one base is usually simpler.
Best first base by travel style
City + culture: Málaga.
Beach + airport: Torremolinos.
Family + activities: Benalmádena.
Simple beach + train: Fuengirola.
Luxury/lifestyle: Marbella.
Quieter western stay: Estepona.
Smaller eastern-coast atmosphere: Nerja.
Before booking
Check:
- exact neighbourhood;
- airport journey;
- beach or centre walking route;
- transport;
- nightlife/noise;
- supermarket;
- what you want to do on most days;
- whether the destination fits your group.
The right first base is the one that makes ordinary days easy.
