Best beaches in Mijas Costa: La Cala, Calahonda and quieter stretches
Mijas Costa is not one continuous urban beach destination. The municipality's official tourism site distinguishes beaches including La Cala, Calahonda–Riviera, Calahonda–Royal Beach and other smaller sections along a spread-out coastline. That means the "best" beach is often the one whose access works from your exact accommodation.

La Cala is the strongest all-round option; Calahonda/Riviera makes more sense when you already stay in that part of Mijas Costa.
Quick answer
Choose La Cala for the easiest combination of beach, restaurants, walking and normal daily services. Choose Calahonda–Riviera if your accommodation is in Calahonda/Riviera and you want to minimise driving. Choose smaller residential stretches only after checking the actual path, parking and road crossings.
Playa La Cala
Official Mijas tourism lists Playa La Cala as easy to reach on foot, by car and by bus, with an adapted bathing facility for people with reduced mobility.
This makes La Cala the clearest recommendation for first-time visitors and families.
The real advantage is not a claim that it is universally prettier; it is that the beach sits beside a functioning town centre where lunch, supermarkets and evening plans are easy.
Calahonda–Riviera
The municipality describes Calahonda–Riviera as accessible on foot, by car and by bus, with a mix of sand and rock on the seabed.
It is a logical choice if you stay in Calahonda or Riviera.
Do not travel from La Cala solely because a generic list calls it "better"; the value comes from reducing transport and using the beach closest to your actual urbanisation.
Calahonda–Royal Beach
Royal Beach is another official Calahonda section.
It has straightforward access according to the municipal tourism listing, but its smaller scale means you should check current services and the exact access rather than assuming it offers the same infrastructure as La Cala.
What about Miraflores and other urbanisations?
Mijas Costa is full of residential and resort zones where the map can make the sea look deceptively close.
Bridges, slopes, road crossings and internal resort layouts can make the final route longer than expected.
When booking accommodation, ask for the actual walking route to the sand, not just the straight-line distance.
Accessibility
La Cala has an explicitly listed adapted bathing facility on the current municipal tourism page.
Other beaches have individual accessibility classifications.
If step-free access or assisted bathing is essential, verify the exact beach and current service rather than generalising from "Mijas Costa".
Families
La Cala is the easiest default because beach, food, shops and everyday services are concentrated.
Calahonda/Riviera can work equally well when the accommodation is genuinely close to the beach.
With young children, avoiding repeated car journeys often matters more than chasing a quieter strip.
Without a car
A car-free stay is most realistic in La Cala when accommodation is central.
The wider Mijas Costa is much more variable than Fuengirola or Torremolinos because there is no continuous rail service along it.
Buses and taxis can work, but choose the property around the transport you will actually use.
See Mijas without a car.
Parking
Driving can be useful, but summer parking and local traffic can remove much of the advantage if you move between beaches unnecessarily.
If your accommodation already has a good beach nearby, use it and save the car for inland/day-trip days.

Couples
La Cala is strongest when you want a beach-to-dinner day on foot.
A residential Calahonda section can feel quieter, but it works best when your accommodation and transport are already aligned with that area.
Long stays
La Cala is the strongest long-stay beach base because normal daily life does not require a car for every task.
If you choose an urbanisation elsewhere, check supermarket, restaurants, bus stops and gradient as carefully as the beach itself.
Sea conditions
Official pages may describe beach type and usual characteristics, but conditions change.
Check flags and current local information before swimming.

Practical decision rule
First visit or family: La Cala. Staying in Calahonda/Riviera: use the closest verified access there. Do not cross Mijas Costa for a beach ranking unless the different environment genuinely matters to you.
