A rainy day in Antequera: museums, heritage interiors and a compact plan
When outdoor heritage becomes uncomfortable, Antequera still offers a substantial indoor day around MVCA, the Dólmenes Site Museum and changing exhibitions.

Rain changes how you should use Antequera, but it does not leave you without worthwhile options. The city has enough museum and exhibition depth to build a proper indoor-heavy day instead of treating bad weather as a reason to abandon the visit.
The key is to keep the plan compact. Choose one substantial museum first, add a second indoor stop only if energy and opening times suit, and avoid pretending that every historic monument offers shelter from heavy rain.
Start with MVCA in the centre
Museo de la Ciudad de Antequera, MVCA, is the easiest central indoor anchor.
Its permanent collections span from prehistory to the present, giving the museum enough breadth to carry a meaningful part of the day. It also hosts temporary exhibitions, so the exact content can change between visits.
The museum currently states that general admission is free. Because admission policies can change, treat that as live information rather than an evergreen guarantee.
For a rainy day, MVCA works well because it gives you a substantial cultural visit without requiring the day to become a chain of short stops.
Use the Dólmenes Site Museum as the second major option
The Museo de Sitio de los Dólmenes de Antequera is not a tiny interpretation room. Official tourism information gives the museum a total area of about 4,300 square metres.
Its main level includes permanent and temporary exhibition rooms, with additional exhibition, documentation and auditorium spaces elsewhere in the building.
That makes it a genuine second major indoor option.
What you should not do is confuse the museum building with the outdoor dolmens themselves. In heavy rain, the indoor museum may remain useful even when spending extended time around the archaeological monuments outdoors is less comfortable.
Let current exhibitions decide the detail
Antequera's official museum inventory includes MVCA, the Dólmenes museum and other museum or exhibition options, including art and thematic collections.
The important planning distinction is between stable venues and changing content.
In September 2026, the Dólmenes complex had active temporary exhibition programming. That is useful evidence that the museum operates with changing exhibitions, but a specific exhibition should never be frozen into an evergreen rainy-day guide.
Check the current programme shortly before visiting and use it to decide which second stop adds most value.
Do not turn every heritage site into an indoor fallback
Antequera has a rich heritage inventory, but that does not mean every monument is a comfortable bad-weather option.
A rainy-day guide should not assume that an outdoor archaeological site, viewpoint or open-air monument becomes suitable simply because it is historically important.
The strongest plan is museum-led.
Start with MVCA or the Dólmenes Site Museum. Add another museum or exhibition only when it genuinely improves the day. If the rain eases, outdoor heritage can be reintroduced gradually.
Keep admission and hours live
Current visitor conditions matter more on a rainy day because indoor venues carry more of the schedule.
MVCA currently offers free general admission, while other museums may have different policies. Do not generalise one venue's admission rules to the entire city.
Opening hours, temporary exhibitions and special programmes also change. Before leaving, check the current museum hours and the exhibition that matters most to you.
This is more reliable than building an article around fixed timetables that may later be wrong.
It also makes the day easier to adapt. If one temporary exhibition is not running or one venue opens later than expected, the plan does not collapse because the museum network itself remains the stable layer. You simply swap the second stop rather than rebuilding the entire day around a single programme.
A simple rainy-day formula
For most visitors, the easiest plan is:
begin with MVCA in the centre, take a food or coffee break, then decide whether the Dólmenes Site Museum or another current exhibition deserves the second half of the day.
If the weather improves, use the gap to add a short outdoor heritage segment. If it does not, the museum network is already enough to make the day worthwhile.
Antequera has real indoor depth. The best bad-weather strategy is not to see everything, but to use that depth selectively.
