Costa del Sol by bus: when buses beat trains and cars
Buses are essential on the Costa del Sol because the rail network does not cover the whole coast. Cercanías C1 is excellent between Málaga, the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Beyond Fuengirola, however, bus becomes much more important for places such as Marbella, San Pedro and Estepona. The practical rule is simple: use train where rail is direct and convenient, and use bus when the destination sits outside the rail corridor or the bus stop is much closer to where you actually need to go. ## Quick answer Bus is especially useful for: - Málaga ↔ Torremolinos ↔ Benalmádena Costa; - Torremolinos ↔ Fuengirola; - Fuengirola ↔ Marbella; - Málaga ↔ Marbella; - coastal areas between rail stations; - travellers who do not want to rent a car. The main downside is that road traffic affects journey time much more than rail. ## M-110: Málaga, Torremolinos and Benalmádena Costa The M-110 is one of the most useful coastal bus routes. It links Málaga with Torremolinos and Benalmádena Costa, including Puerto Marina. For visitors, that can be more useful than C1 when the hotel is closer to the seafront than to a railway station. Examples: - Málaga to Puerto Marina; - Torremolinos to Benalmádena Costa; - hotel-to-hotel travel along the seafront corridor. The current Consorcio timetable should always be checked before travelling because frequency changes by day and season. ## M-120: Torremolinos to Fuengirola The M-120 links Torremolinos and Fuengirola and serves coastal stops including Puerto Marina. This makes it useful when: - your origin or destination is near the seafront; - you do not want to walk uphill to a station; - you are travelling between beach zones rather than town centres. C1 is often faster for station-to-station travel. M-120 can be better for door-to-neighbourhood convenience. ## M-220: Fuengirola to Marbella The M-220 is a key west-coast route. It links Las Lagunas / Fuengirola with Marbella and serves areas including La Cala de Mijas, Sitio de Calahonda and Leila Playa. That makes it extremely useful because the railway currently ends in Fuengirola. For many travellers, Fuengirola works as the rail-to-bus interchange point for continuing west. If you are staying in Mijas Costa or Calahonda, M-220 can be more useful than travelling back toward Málaga. ## M-320: Málaga to Marbella The M-320 provides a direct Málaga–Marbella corridor with intermediate coastal stops including Torremolinos, Puerto Marina, Fuengirola-area stops and La Cala de Mijas. This can be useful when: - you want one continuous bus; - you have luggage; - you do not want to change from train to bus in Fuengirola; - your destination is close to a stop on the route. However, road traffic can make journey times less predictable than rail. ## Bus versus train Choose **train** when: - both origin and destination are on C1; - you want predictable journey time; - you are travelling to the airport; - traffic is heavy. Choose **bus** when: - your destination has no rail station; - the bus stop is much closer to your hotel; - you are travelling west of Fuengirola; - you want a one-seat journey. For many trips, combining both is best. ## The Fuengirola interchange strategy A common strategy is: 1. use C1 to Fuengirola; 2. continue by M-220 or another westbound bus. This is useful for Marbella-area travel. But check whether a direct Málaga–Marbella bus is simpler for your exact journey. The best option depends on connection time, luggage and destination stop. ## Benalmádena: train or bus? Benalmádena is a good example of why the answer is not always obvious. C1 serves Arroyo de la Miel. Bus serves Benalmádena Costa and Puerto Marina more directly. If you are going to Arroyo, train is usually strong. If you are going to the marina or a coastal hotel, M-110 or M-120 may save a steep walk or taxi. ## Torremolinos: train or bus? Torremolinos has excellent C1 access, but the town includes several coastal zones. Train is strong for: - airport; - Málaga; - Fuengirola; - town-centre access. Bus may be better for: - La Carihuela; - seafront hotels; - Puerto Marina; - coast-to-coast local movement. Compare the final walking route. ## Marbella without a car Marbella is entirely realistic without a car if your itinerary is focused. Use: - intercity bus for arrival; - local bus/taxi inside the municipality; - walking within one district. The difficulty comes when you try to cross Marbella, Puerto Banús, Nueva Andalucía, San Pedro and eastern Marbella repeatedly. Choose accommodation close to your main daily area. ## Estepona without a car Estepona requires more planning because it is farther west and has no rail. Long-distance and intercity bus can still work well. For airport arrival, compare: - direct coach; - bus via Marbella; - private transfer. If you are staying for a week and mostly remaining in Estepona, a bus arrival can be perfectly practical. ## Nerja by bus Nerja is east of Málaga and outside the Cercanías network. Bus is therefore much more important. For travellers who mainly want Nerja, Frigiliana and the eastern coast, public transport can still work. The main issue is not rail absence itself; it is whether your accommodation and planned excursions align with bus stops. ## Seasonal timetables This is crucial. The Consorcio changes and reinforces some routes in summer. In 2026, for example, summer services were extended on several coastal routes, including additional M-220 departures and later operating hours. Do not copy a timetable from an old blog. Check the current official schedule on the day you travel. ## Traffic risk Buses share the road. Journey times can increase during: - summer weekends; - peak commuting hours; - accidents; - major events; - holiday changeover days. If you have a flight or fixed reservation, allow margin. For airport travel from the rail corridor, C1 is often more reliable. ## Luggage A direct coach can be more comfortable with luggage than making multiple local transfers. But check: - luggage space; - whether the service is coach or urban-style bus; - boarding point; - how far the stop is from the hotel. One direct bus plus a short taxi can be easier than three technically cheaper connections. ## Accessibility Accessibility varies by vehicle and route. Do not assume every intercity departure uses the same bus type. If you use a wheelchair, scooter or walker, verify the exact service and boarding requirements. For the western coast, some intercity operators mark specific PMR services. ## Tickets Ticketing depends on the route and operator. The metropolitan Consorcio operates an integrated fare environment across many local routes. For occasional tourists, the simplest option may still be buying the appropriate ticket for the specific journey. If you plan many journeys, check current Consorcio card/app options. ## Apps and live information Use official operator or Consorcio sources for: - route changes; - current timetables; - service alerts; - stop locations. Do not rely only on a static screenshot. Seasonal changes can make an old timetable wrong even when the route number is unchanged. ## Night travel Some coastal routes run later in summer, but late-night service is not identical all year. If you are planning dinner or nightlife away from your base, check the return journey before leaving. Otherwise, budget for taxi. A good outward journey is useless if there is no practical return. ## Families Bus can be very useful for families staying near coastal stops. Consider: - stroller; - luggage; - child tiredness; - connection time; - walking distance from stop. Sometimes train plus taxi is easier than two buses. ## Couples For couples, bus is especially useful when staying around Puerto Marina, La Cala de Mijas or Marbella without a car. It lets you avoid parking while still moving between resort areas. For late dinners, check the return service first. ## Day trips Good bus-based day trips can include: - Málaga ↔ Marbella; - Fuengirola ↔ Marbella; - Torremolinos ↔ Benalmádena Costa; - Fuengirola ↔ La Cala de Mijas; - coastal stops between the main towns. Choose trips with simple return logistics. ## When renting a car is still better Bus is not always the best tool. A car may be better for: - multiple inland villages in one day; - golf; - remote beaches; - hiking trailheads; - large family groups; - itineraries with several scattered stops. Public transport works best when the trip follows the main urban and coastal corridors. ## Best strategy by destination **Málaga / airport / Torremolinos / Arroyo / Fuengirola:** start with C1. **Benalmádena Costa / Puerto Marina:** compare bus with train. **Marbella / La Cala / Calahonda:** bus becomes essential. **Estepona:** plan intercity bus or transfer. **Nerja:** use eastbound bus network or transfer. ## Before travelling Check: 1. current official timetable; 2. exact stop; 3. final walking route; 4. seasonal changes; 5. return journey; 6. traffic margin; 7. luggage; 8. accessibility; 9. backup taxi; 10. whether train + bus is better than bus only. The best bus journey is the one that solves the entire door-to-door route, not just the longest segment. Read guide →Costa del Sol by train: C1, C2, airport and real rail coverage
The train is one of the best ways to move around the central Costa del Sol without a car, but only if your trip fits the rail network. C1 is the visitor line: Málaga Centro Alameda, Málaga María Zambrano, Málaga Airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. C2 runs inland toward Álora. The important limitation is simple: there is no Cercanías train to Marbella, Estepona, Nerja or Mijas Pueblo. ## Quick answer Use C1 for Málaga, the airport, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Los Boliches and Fuengirola. Use C2 mainly for inland stops including Cártama, Pizarra and Álora. Outside that corridor, use bus, taxi, transfer or car. ## C1 route Renfe's current Málaga map shows C1 from Málaga Centro Alameda to Fuengirola. Useful visitor stops include Málaga Centro Alameda, Málaga María Zambrano, Aeropuerto, Plaza Mayor, Los Álamos, Torremolinos, Montemar Alto, El Pinillo, Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel, Torremuelle, Carvajal, Torreblanca, Los Boliches and Fuengirola. That makes C1 exceptionally useful for a no-car beach holiday. ## Airport links Aena currently gives approximate C1 times of 12 minutes from the airport to Málaga centre, 8 minutes to María Zambrano, 18 minutes to Benalmádena and 34 minutes to Fuengirola. Those figures are useful for planning, but always check the actual timetable for your travel date. ## Torremolinos Torremolinos is one of the easiest C1 destinations. Several stations serve different parts of the municipality. A short taxi from the station can be smarter than walking with luggage or taking a taxi all the way from the airport. ## Benalmádena Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel is the main station for most visitors. Torremuelle and Carvajal serve other areas. Because Benalmádena has significant gradients, train + taxi is often the best combination for coastal hotels. ## Fuengirola Fuengirola is the C1 terminus. Los Boliches has its own station, while Torreblanca and Carvajal can also be useful depending on accommodation. Check the real hotel route: some properties sit uphill even when the station looks close on a map. ## Málaga María Zambrano María Zambrano is the main interchange for longer-distance rail. Cercanías connects there with AVE, Avlo and other Renfe services. If you are combining the Costa del Sol with Madrid, Córdoba or another rail destination, this station can simplify the whole trip. ## Málaga Centro Alameda Centro Alameda places you inside central Málaga. For many hotels in Centro Histórico or Soho, the final walk or taxi is short. ## C2 inland line C2 runs from Málaga toward Álora through stops including Campanillas, Cártama, Pizarra and Álora. It is more useful for inland travel than for a typical beach holiday. ## C1 versus C2 C1 = coast + airport. C2 = inland. Most visitors staying between Málaga and Fuengirola will use C1 much more. ## Frequency and crowding Renfe stated in August 2026 that C1 currently operates at roughly 20-minute intervals and is already heavily used. Renfe also reported more than 15.5 million passengers in the Málaga Cercanías network in 2025, with demand concentrated strongly on C1. Summer, events, airport peaks and commuting hours can therefore be crowded. ## Tickets and contactless Renfe's current Málaga Cercanías page says passengers can pay directly at station gates with a bank card or mobile through Cronos. Conventional Cercanías ticket options also remain available. Check current fares and conditions before travelling because products and discounts can change. ## No train to Marbella There is no C1 service to Marbella. A possible combination is C1 to Fuengirola and then bus or taxi, but from Málaga a direct bus may be better. Compare total journey time, luggage and connection waiting. ## No train to Estepona There is no train to Estepona. Direct bus, private transfer or car is usually more logical than travelling to Fuengirola and continuing west. ## No train to Nerja Nerja has no Cercanías station. Bus from Málaga or a direct transfer is normally more practical. ## No train to Mijas Pueblo Mijas Pueblo has no rail station. Fuengirola is the useful gateway: continue from there by local bus or taxi. ## Train + taxi A very effective Costa del Sol strategy is C1 for the long section and taxi for the last kilometre. This works especially well for Benalmádena coast, hillside accommodation, luggage-heavy arrivals and travellers with limited mobility. ## Train + bus Train + bus can extend C1 to Mijas Pueblo, Marbella and other places outside the rail network. Check connection times carefully; a theoretically cheap route is not useful if the wait is very long. ## Accessibility Renfe's official map marks accessible stations and trains. Still check the exact route: entrance, lift status, platform access, boarding and the final section to your hotel. Renfe has also been carrying out accessibility improvements at several Málaga Cercanías stations in 2026. ## Luggage Ordinary luggage is straightforward, but crowded trains make multiple large cases, golf bags, pushchairs or mobility equipment more awkward. Travel outside peak periods when possible. ## Early flights Never assume the first train is early enough. Check the exact schedule for your departure date. For very early flights, taxi or prebooked transfer may be necessary. ## Late arrivals The same applies at night. Do not rely on a remembered last-train time, and do not treat special-event trains as part of the normal timetable. ## Day trips From Fuengirola, C1 makes Benalmádena, Torremolinos and Málaga easy. From Benalmádena, it gives direct access to Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Málaga and the airport. From Torremolinos, the same corridor supports several no-car day trips. From Málaga, C1 opens the central coast while C2 adds inland options such as Álora. ## Beach access A station near the sea does not always mean a flat walk. Check gradients, pavements, crossings, luggage and heat. Carvajal and Torreblanca are good examples where terrain matters. ## Best train bases **Best overall rail hub:** Málaga. **Best beach town with C1:** Fuengirola. **Best resort + rail compromise:** Benalmádena-Arroyo de la Miel. **Best airport-adjacent resort base:** Torremolinos. ## Choosing a base by trip length For a 2–3 night city break, Málaga is the strongest rail base because airport, centre and long-distance trains connect easily. For a one-week beach holiday without a car, Fuengirola and Benalmádena gain value because C1 supports both daily life and simple day trips. For longer stays, choose the station that reduces repeated walking between accommodation, supermarket and transport rather than simply the most famous town. ## Before travelling Check the correct station, timetable, live disruptions, ticket method, first/last train, luggage, accessibility, final hotel route, onward bus/taxi and extra airport margin. C1 is extremely useful, but only inside the corridor it actually serves. ## Sources - Renfe — Málaga Cercanías network, C1/C2 map, fares and live information. - Aena — Málaga Airport C1 connection and approximate journey times. - Renfe Group — 2026 C1 operating and accessibility updates. Read guide →Costa del Sol taxi guide: when taxis make sense and what to check
Taxis are one of the most useful transport tools on the Costa del Sol, but they make the most sense when used selectively. They are excellent for the last kilometre, late dinners, luggage, mobility needs and destinations outside the rail corridor. They are less efficient when a direct C1 train or simple bus already solves the same journey. The key is to understand whether the trip is urban or interurban, which municipality regulates the taxi, whether supplements apply and whether you need a standard car, larger vehicle or accessible taxi. ## Quick answer Use a taxi when: - your hotel is uphill from a station; - you have heavy luggage; - you arrive late; - you are travelling to a villa or golf course; - you need a direct airport transfer; - nightlife makes driving a bad idea; - public transport requires several awkward changes. Use train/bus instead when: - both points are on a direct C1 route; - traffic is heavy; - the journey is long and well served by public transport; - you are travelling alone on a tight budget. ## Urban and interurban fares are not the same A taxi journey inside one municipality can follow an urban tariff. A journey crossing municipal boundaries can be subject to interurban rules. This matters because visitors often assume one fixed “Costa del Sol taxi price” exists. It does not. Málaga and Marbella, for example, publish their own current urban tariff structures. For cross-municipality trips, check the applicable interurban fare or ask for an official estimate. ## Málaga official urban taxi tariffs Málaga’s municipal mobility department publishes the current official urban taxi tariff and interurban references. The official tariff distinguishes several time bands. It also publishes: - minimum service; - flag fall; - per-kilometre rate; - waiting time; - airport-related minimums/supplements; - certain special-period supplements. Because tariffs can change, always use the current municipal tariff rather than an old travel blog. ## Marbella official 2026 taxi tariffs Marbella updated its taxi tariff page on 28 September 2026. The municipality lists 2026 urban tariffs approved on 5 February 2026, including: - daytime weekday tariff; - night/weekend/holiday tariff; - special Christmas/New Year tariff; - pickup supplement; - supplement for occupancy above five seats. This is a useful reminder that the fare can vary by time and service conditions. ## Do not copy Málaga fares to Marbella This is a common mistake. Even when the same regional framework exists, municipalities may publish different urban tariff structures and supplements. The fare shown in Málaga is not automatically the fare for Marbella, Benalmádena or Fuengirola. For a long intercity journey, ask the driver/operator which tariff applies before departure. ## Airport taxis A taxi from Málaga Airport is useful when: - your hotel is not near C1; - you land late; - you have several bags; - you are travelling as a family/group; - you are going to Marbella, Estepona, Mijas inland or Nerja. For Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola, compare with C1. A direct train can be faster and cheaper when the station is convenient. ## Airport pickup At the airport, use the official taxi rank or a properly prebooked service. Avoid accepting unsolicited rides from individuals approaching you inside the terminal. For a prebooked transfer, confirm: - meeting point; - flight number; - waiting policy; - vehicle size; - price structure; - cancellation terms. ## Taxi versus private transfer A taxi is usually best for flexible, on-demand trips. A private transfer can be better when: - several passengers travel together; - you need child seats; - you use a wheelchair; - you have golf bags; - you arrive late; - you want a guaranteed larger vehicle. The important thing is not the label but the service specification. ## Taxi versus C1 train C1 is often better for: - airport ↔ Málaga; - airport ↔ Torremolinos; - airport ↔ Arroyo de la Miel; - airport ↔ Fuengirola; - Málaga ↔ Torremolinos/Benalmádena/Fuengirola. Taxi can still win if your hotel is far from the station. A train plus short taxi can be the best combination. ## Taxi versus bus Bus is usually cheaper for longer coastal journeys. Taxi is better when: - the bus requires a transfer; - your destination is far from a stop; - you travel late; - you have luggage; - several people can share the fare. For Marbella, Estepona and Nerja, compare both. ## Last kilometre strategy This is where taxis are particularly useful. Examples: - C1 to Torremolinos + taxi downhill/uphill to hotel; - C1 to Arroyo + taxi to a steep Benalmádena Costa property; - C1 to Fuengirola + taxi to Mijas inland; - bus to Marbella + taxi to villa/New Golden Mile hotel. Using taxi for only the difficult part can save a lot compared with taxiing the entire journey. ## Night travel Taxi becomes much more valuable after dinner or nightlife. Benefits: - no parking; - no alcohol/driving issue; - no waiting for the last bus; - direct return to hotel. But remember that night/weekend tariffs can differ from weekday daytime tariffs. Check the current local tariff. ## Puerto Banús Taxi is particularly practical for Puerto Banús nightlife. Parking can be stressful during busy evenings and nobody should be planning to drive after drinking. If your hotel is in central Marbella, Golden Mile or Nueva Andalucía, taxi can be the simplest evening transport. ## Old towns Taxi can also help with historic centres. However, pedestrian restrictions may mean the taxi cannot stop directly at the hotel entrance. Ask the accommodation for the correct drop-off point. This matters in old-town areas of Marbella, Málaga, Estepona, Mijas Pueblo and Nerja. ## Golf trips Taxi or private driver can work well for golf groups. Confirm: - number of golfers; - golf bags; - vehicle capacity; - pickup time; - return after the round. Standard taxis may not comfortably fit four golfers plus four bags. Book the right vehicle. ## Families Families should confirm: - child-seat requirements; - luggage; - pushchairs; - group size; - larger vehicle availability. Do not assume every taxi carries a child seat. For airport transfers, prebooking a properly equipped vehicle can be easier. ## Larger groups For five or more passengers, you may need a larger licensed vehicle. Marbella’s 2026 tariff explicitly includes a supplement for occupancy above five seats in larger vehicles. Other municipalities may handle this differently. Confirm before travel. ## Accessible taxis If you need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, prebook. Tell the operator: - wheelchair type; - whether you remain seated; - powered/manual; - dimensions; - luggage; - number of companions. Do not assume every taxi rank has an adapted vehicle immediately available. ## Mobility scooters A mobility scooter may require a larger adapted vehicle. Check: - weight; - foldability; - battery; - dimensions; - whether it can be secured safely. A standard boot may not be enough. ## Receipt and fare transparency Ask for a receipt if you need one. Official taxi services should apply the authorised tariff. If you are unsure about a supplement, ask what it covers. For fixed-price transfers, confirm the total before travel. ## Card payments Many taxis accept cards, and Málaga’s official tariff material explicitly references card payment. But it is still sensible to confirm before starting the trip, especially outside major towns. Keep an alternative payment method. ## Luggage supplements Do not assume luggage is always free or always charged. Supplements depend on the applicable tariff framework. Málaga publishes specific luggage-related tariff information in its official material. Check the current rule for the municipality/service you use. ## Waiting time Waiting can increase the fare. This matters if you ask a taxi to: - wait during shopping; - make multiple stops; - wait outside a villa; - stop for another passenger. Sometimes booking a second taxi later is cheaper than paying continuous waiting time. ## Multiple stops Tell the driver before departure if you need several stops. For groups splitting across hotels, a taxi may still be practical, but the route and waiting can change the total. For complicated itineraries, a private transfer may be easier to price. ## Traffic Taxi fares and journey times can be affected by traffic. Allow extra margin for: - summer weekends; - airport peak periods; - Marbella/Puerto Banús events; - Málaga city congestion; - road incidents. For flights, do not plan around the best-case driving time. ## Booking apps and radio taxi Different municipalities have different licensed taxi organisations and booking channels. Use a local official/established service where possible. Do not assume an app available in Málaga has identical coverage in Nerja or Estepona. ## Taxi from train station A useful pattern is: - train for the long segment; - taxi for the final local segment. This works especially well in Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. It combines predictable rail with door-to-door convenience. ## Taxi from bus station For Marbella, Estepona and Nerja, the same principle applies. Use intercity bus for the long section and taxi from the terminal/stop to the accommodation. This can be much cheaper than a taxi from Málaga Airport while still avoiding a difficult final walk. ## When taxi is worth the premium Taxi is especially worth it when it saves: - two transfers; - a steep walk; - 30 minutes of luggage handling; - parking stress; - missed last bus; - risk around drinking and driving. Price is only one part of value. ## When taxi is poor value Taxi is usually poor value when: - C1 is direct; - you are travelling alone; - traffic is heavy; - the destination is beside a station; - the trip is long and a direct coach exists. Use the right tool for the journey. ## Before getting in Check: 1. licensed taxi; 2. municipality/service; 3. meter or authorised fare; 4. supplements; 5. card payment if needed; 6. vehicle size; 7. child seat/accessibility; 8. destination/drop-off; 9. traffic margin; 10. receipt if required. ## Sources - Ayuntamiento de Málaga / Área de Movilidad — current taxi regulations and official urban/interurban tariff material. - Ayuntamiento de Marbella — 2026 authorised urban taxi tariffs. - Ayuntamiento de Benalmádena — current municipal taxi service information.
